Biography

Debra graduated with honors from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 1989, when it was still known as OCA. She majored in drawing and painting and did a postgraduate year to pursue her love of figurative sculpture. Since leaving the college, Debra has earned a reputation as an accomplished portrait artist.

Debra’s work is figurative in nature; she strives to capture the essence and individuality of each of her subjects, while retaining her distinctive, impressionistic style. She accepts commissions for portraiture of all kinds, from children, to pets, to homes and cottages. Regardless of her subjects, she captures not only their likeness but also their character. Her portrait entitled Ships in the Halifax Harbor on Christmas Morning hangs in the Halifax Port Authority Building, and her original pastels as well as her prints can be found in homes as far away as London, England.

Debra has extensive teaching experience. For over 14 years she has shared her talent, warmth, enthusiasm, and skill with students of all ages. She has enjoyed teaching at respected institutions such as Harbourfront Centre in Toronto, the Toronto District School Board, and Klim Art School in Thornhill, as well as conducting portrait painting and drawing workshops with groups of artists in the Toronto and Vaughn Township Areas.

For many years, Debra has made her home at the Arcadia Artists’ Cooperative on Toronto’s Waterfront. She accredits this creative community for much of her inspiration and support and believes it continues to be a vital component of her creative development.

It is with much excitement that Debra will be offering her classes, her commissioned work, her original pastels and her prints through her own studio at Arcadia. The Debra Black Studio will officially open in March 2005. The 8- to 12-year-old group of students has already started classes and, along with past students, will be exhibiting their work with their teacher at the Arcadia Gallery to celebrate the studio’s official opening.
